[[ Brandon Novak ]]

A.K.A. Novak; Exigo the Dreamseller
Demi-God of Infected Dreams
Age 22; North, 17 Railroad North
Power/Advantages:
Novak can withstand severe and fatal physical and emotional abuse because of his history. He is not a fighter, but he can survive a good beating, which he is often faced with. Because he is a demi-God, he has the power to make people feel at ease and relaxed, despite his treacherous and less-than-honorable intentions of acquiring heroin. His power is often mistaken for “friendliness” or “kindness” to the unperceptive because of the good “vibes” it can procure out of people. If he did not have this advantage, people could most likely judge from his appearance that he is up to no good and not at all reliable. Novak’s power is not long lasting, so he usually does not use it often or for long periods of time. In fact, if not careful, it is possible that if Novak is exposed to too much kindness or care, he will infect the person providing it and haunt his or her dreams. Concerning Gods, Novak could easily act as a parasite and drain their strength, both temporarily and permanently depending on how much kindness the Gods show. Novak also inherited the ability to blend and disappear into shadows from his goddess mother.
Weaknesses:
In a way, Novak’s power is his weakness. Because his powers, aside from the shadow element, are a curse that had been placed over him, he cannot get close to people without hurting or killing them. Other than that, Novak will do just about anything and everything to get one more hit. He would, could, and has done everything for a quick fix or a fifty. His weak constitutions against any temptation—be it drugs, sex, or booze—will always be the cause of his downfall. He is so willing and desperate to get down and crawl if it concerns cash or drugs, that he is often perceived as unintelligent and very unworthy of his demi-God name. Although he has unfortunately accepted his lifestyle and has continually deceived the people around him, he has a tender heart under his rough exterior and—though he would never admit it—he sometimes hopes of a day when his family and friends will forgive him and take him back. So anything to do with his family, friends or general past is also a detrimental weakness.
Brief History:
Brandon Novak is the bastard son of his mortal father, Jerome Novak, and his divine mother, Nyx, deity of Night. Growing up, Novak did not know his mother, because she fled, knowing that the Gods cannot be found meddling with mortals. He was born in Baltimore, Maryland and lived the majority of his childhood as a professional skateboarder because of his skill and talent. He had been skating since age four. His talent was recognized when he was eight and it would seem that “the rest,”—as they say—“was history.” That all fell apart when Novak turned fourteen. Not only was he introduced to heroin, but he was also introduced to Morpheus, God of Human Dreams, and his equally awe-worthy family. He met Morpheus' father, Hypnos, Deity of Sleep, and his own beautiful mother, Nyx, Deity of Night; this is when Novak realizes that Morpheus is his brother. Both Hypnos and Morpheus resented Novak’s existence, thinking him unworthy of being called a demi-God when he was the product and reminder of Nyx’s affair with a mortal. In his hatred for his human relation, Morpheus enabled Novak's habit and as the drug consumed him, Morpheus removed all of Brandon's dreams for himself—a God who could never experience or create any of his own—to leave him with nothing but a very human addiction.
After his career was indefinitely ruined, Novak turned to Morpheus for more heroin, only to be rejected because his objective was done: to ruin Novak. In his desperation, Novak turned to Nyx, who—as his mother—took great pity on her half-human son and devised a plan in which Brandon would take and steal the human dreams that Morpheus created and coveted, and sold them for petty money on the streets like drugs: escapism in a capsule. Novak went by the name, “Exigo” [seller in Latin] to avoid detection.
This worked for a very limited amount of time until Morpheus realized that his dreams grew less in number at an impossible rate. Morpheus forced his mother, Nyx, to tell him everything. Enraged, both Morpheus and Hypnos hunted Novak down, putting him through numerous, excruciating tortures, including intensifying and lengthening Novak's withdrawal with the help of Morpheus' sons, Phobetor and Phantasos, both responsible for objects/animals in dreams as well as nightmares. Novak’s supposed “family” cursed him to forever live a life as a reject demi-God who cannot bring himself close enough to both humans and Gods to be loved without hurting them.
Through these tortures and experiences, Novak developed the powers that Nyx had given him at birth but had done nothing about until then, due to his lack of knowledge of them or how they worked. Novak was able to escape his divine family, as well as his human one, and got the hell out of Dodge to land himself in the City. Now, Novak is a man made of tragedies and misfortune, no longer surprised of anything and still a slave to his addiction.
Because of this, Novak has subjected himself to using his “curse,” but just enough to get one more hit to kill the loneliness the curse promises. When he is high, it is an exhilarating feeling of living versus when he is sober, he feels the weight of one sorrowful and isolating fact: he did not belong anywhere and will die alone.
